Nottingham Trent University's Student Union has been accused of being "afraid of the democratic process" after plans for a UKIP society were thwarted.

The Young Independence society has been in the planning over the last few weeks.

But despite the society being recommended for approval, the Societies Assembly decided against letting the society be formed.

UKIP MEP for the East Midlands Margot Parker said: "This is disgraceful - an absolute affront to democracy.

"It appears to me someone, somewhere seems afraid of the democratic process - I thought places of higher education welcomed all points of view and supported freedom and democracy.

"UKIP is a serious and popular political party - I would urge the Student Union to look again at this decision."

The student union said in a statement: "There is an appeals process for use by our students in the event that they are unhappy with a decision of the Societies Assembly with regard to affiliation."

An appeal against the ruling has been lodged and would now be considered.

The union would not discuss the reasons behind the decision to prevent the society from being formed.
