Anxious residents have breathed a sigh of relief after a meeting to discuss plans for a charity to create flats for recovering alcoholics and drug users was cancelled.
Many believe that was a sign that the entire plan could be shelved. Framework Housing Associations had applied to convert a disused electricity substation into to self-contained flats, in Rectory Road, Colwick, in November.
And after a backlash from hundreds of locals, the charity organised a drop-in question and answer session yesterday afternoon.
But the proposed gathering, which was planned after Gedling Borough Council received a 187-signature-petition from residents who are against the site, did not go ahead as scheduled.
A sign was put up on the doors of the Colwick Community Centre stating that "planning officers have now requested further significant changes" to the site's design.
Alison Nunn, a landlord who lives in Rectory Road, launched the petition shortly after the initial application went in.
The 50-year-old said: "I think the cancellation is a positive thing because it seems like they now have to go back to the drawing board.
"The building is completely inappropriate and doesn't fit in with the way the houses are built around here."
The "move-on" accommodation planned for the village is the last stage of Framework's rehabilitation process before residents live independently.
A similar complex of flats in Antill Street was given planning permission despite pressure from local residents.
Russell Batchelor, 69, of Vale Side Gardens, says the meeting's cancellation is something to feel positive about.
He said: "Hopefully it means the idea will be scrapped. No one wants them here."
Donna Wilson, 34, of Vale Road, agrees with Mr Batchelor.
She said: "My children walk to the church once a week and I wouldn't feel safe if the building went ahead.
"You have to bear in mind that these people won't want to sit staring at the same four walls all evening."
The drop-in session was due to take place between 4pm and 7pm yesterday, and Framework says the meeting will be re-arranged for a later date.
Gedling Borough Council did not respond to a request for comment.
The borough council's planning committee will discuss the proposals in March.
