There are many ways to say "I love you" - but deaf people showed that actions speak louder than words on Valentine's Day.

More than 30 volunteers and service users of Nottinghamshire Deaf Society taught couples in Old Market Square how to use sign language to show their love for each other on Saturday.

The demonstration was part of a campaign to raise £125,000 and awareness of the charity to mark its 125th anniversary.

Chief executive Irene Andrews said: "On Valentine's Day it has more impact to use sign language - it's more romantic because actions speak louder than words.

"We stopped couples and children, who we taught to say 'I love you' to their mum and dad.

"You'd be amazed at how many people we met actually knew some sign language. A lot of people know a little bit because it's so intuitive and much of it is using facial expressions."

Members of the public also learned how to say "Happy Valentine's Day" - by clapping their hands, creating a heart shape and making a sunrise motion.

Sign language tutor Robert Powell, who is deaf, used a puppet called Signing Olly to teach children.

The 67-year-old said: "It was a perfect chance to tell people about what we do on Valentine's Day.

"It was nice to be able to go up to couples and help them learn new skills by showing them how to say 'I love you' in sign language."

The society provides social activities for deaf people, training courses and an interpretation service.

Beeston resident Tim Going, 69, and his wife Helen, 67, are both deaf and said they couldn't cope without the service.

Mr Going, a retired gardener, said: "Without it there would be nothing for us - it would be boring.

"We'd be in a hearing world but unable to communicate, whereas the deaf society helps us."

Adele Bourquin, 21, visiting from Lyon, France, said using sign language on Valentine's Day was "cute".

She added: "It would be nice to learn more sign language and how to say things because we don't have that much contact with deaf people."
