NOTTINGHAM Forest are poised to make a cut-price bid to land Bolton's Spanish defender Marcos Alonso.

The left-back cost Wanderers £2.5m when he signed from Real Madrid in the summer of 2010, but is out of contract at the end of the season.

And Forest are set to test the water with a bid for the 22-year-old, who could be available for as little as £200,000.

Alonso has recently forced his way back into the Bolton first team under former Reds striker Dougie Freedman, but has yet to put pen to paper on the new contract the Championship club have offered.

Alonso has played eight times for Bolton this season, scoring two goals – but has made only 15 starts overall at the Reebok Stadium and could be tempted by the chance to kick-start his career at the City Ground.

Although, with Premier League Swansea also interested in Alonso, Forest retain a number of alternative options.

Alex McLeish has made the left side of defence a priority during the transfer window, with Dan Harding currently lacking natural competition for his place.

And Forest also still have an interest in Southampton's Danny Fox, who was previously a target for the Reds before he moved to Celtic from Coventry in 2009.

The 26-year-old has since played for Burnley, before moving to Southampton in August 2011.

Fox was a first-team regular last season, as Southampton made the step up into the top flight under Nigel Adkins.

But, with the emergence of 17-year-old starlet Luke Shaw at St Mary's, Fox has made only eight league starts during the current campaign.

Forest have also been made aware of the availability of Goran Popov, the Dynamo Kiev defender who is currently on loan at West Brom.

The 28-year-old has started six Premier League games for the Baggies, but has been made available for £1m by the Ukrainian club, who are keen to sell.

Popov, a Macedonian international who can also play on the left wing, has experience in Greek and Dutch football and won the Dutch Cup with Heerenveen in 2008. He has played 44-times for his country.

Forest are also casting their net far and wide in their search for a striker, with Andrija Delibaši, an experienced Montenegro international, also understood to be on their list of potential targets.

The 31-year-old currently plays for Rayo Vallecano in Spain, who he helped win promotion to the top flight. He had previously also helped Hercules secure a place in La Liga's Primera Division.

Meanwhile, Forest are not yet understood to have upped their initial bids for either Birmingham winger Chris Burke or Peterborough's attacking midfielder George Boyd.
