A CONMAN has been tricking motorists out of cash by parking up and pretending to be stranded. Notts Police are warning people to be on the look out for the fraudster, who has been targeting good samaritans on the A1 in Notts and the M1. The man first parks up and pops his bonnet, pretending to have a problem with his car. When concerned motorists stop to ask if he needs help, he claims to have broken down or run out of petrol and asks if they can lend him money. To gain their confidence, he offers jewellery and a card featuring his contact details as a guarantee. The jewellery later turns out to be worthless and the contact details false. The latest incident happened at the Retford junction of the A1 at around 11.20am on Wednesday. A woman stopped to help the man, who is in his late 30s, around 5ft 10ins tall and with short dark hair. He is of stocky build and Asian or of mixed race. He was well dressed and polite and driving a silver saloon car. But the woman did not fall for his scam and instead called the police. The man left before officers arrived. If you have had a similar encounter or have any information about the culprit contact Notts Police on the 101 non-emergency number or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
