A CONVICTED child rapist is missing in the Czech Republic after Notts Police lost track of him.
The man, who police have not named, is on the sex offenders' register, meaning he must keep to strict conditions so he can be monitored.
Although he is originally from the Czech Republic, the force must keep tabs on him because his crime was committed in Britain – although the force could not say whether it happened in Notts.
He disappeared in November and police later found he had left the country.
The man, who raped a teenager, is one of two paedophiles who are supposed to be monitored but which the force has lost track of.
The other is a man missing after not telling Notts Police he had changed his address.
He had been convicted of a sexual assault on a six-year-old in South Yorkshire. Notts Police are monitoring him because he was arrested in Notts.
They also did not name him or give further details of the crime, saying releasing the details of both men could undermine efforts to catch them.
Superintendent Helen Chamberlain, head of public protection for the force, said: "Those who are required to sign the sex offenders' register have to adhere to stringent conditions. Some of those conditions are to notify the police of where they are living and to inform the police if they intend to travel out of the country.
"Anyone who breaks those or flees the country needs to know that we work with Interpol and local police forces to catch them and bring them back to this country to face justice."
A force spokeswoman said Notts Police is working with Czech police to find him.
They said the second man was last seen in Derbyshire.
Both of their cases came to light after a Freedom of Information Act request by a national newspaper about how many registered sex offenders who had committed crimes against children were missing across the UK.
Under public protection rules, the police are monitoring about 950 sex offenders in Notts.
Depending on the level of risk, officers plan regular visits to offenders, who also have to notify the authorities if they are travelling to certain locations or going abroad.
Sex offenders must also give their fingerprints and have their pictures taken every year.
Olwen Edwards, Notts divisional manager for Victim Support, said: "I don't think it's acceptable for these people to go missing, but while it is horrifying to know they are at large for the victims, it is understandable that individuals can go off the radar. Notts Police have a good record of managing these people."
Superintendent Chamberlain added: "We have not yet exhausted all avenues of investigation in finding these men and releasing their details at this stage could have a negative impact on the success of these operations.
"We have a duty of care to the victims and their families. Their safety and welfare is paramount to our investigations and we would not do anything to undermine that."
