THE article on that great character Tommy Deans included a photograph of Tommy Lawton blowing out the candles on his 65th birthday cake with his son, Tom junior.
This was in the Meadow Club at Notts County and the event was a This Is Your Life Tommy Lawton, organised by Evening Post editor Barrie Williams and Post promotions manager Bob Britten.
The show was compered by the comedian Charlie Williams, who had been a centre-half with Doncaster.
Joining Tommy on stage were a bevy of famous footballers. Tommy Deans represented the Lawton promotion-winning team of Notts County.
Others attending were Tom (now Sir Tom) Finney, Raich Carter, Peter Doherty, Neil Franklin, Stan Cullis, John Carey, Jackie Sewell, and the Scottish international centre-half who had many tussles with Tommy, George Young, together with Notts County's Ron Wylie.
The greatest gathering of footballers ever to have graced Meadow Lane since the ground opened in 1910.
At the end of the evening I went on stage and made Tommy a life member of Notts County.
Barrie Williams and the Post, which then employed Tommy as a correspondent with a weekly column, rescued him from the tragic depths into which his life had descended – and all of those privileged to have experienced the Lawton years will forever be grateful for that.

WHATEVER the merits of Sainsbury's supermarket and other potential developers on the Colwick Industrial Estate, there is no doubt that this will result in a huge increase in traffic from the Colwick Loop Road.
It also clear that there will be little pedestrian access from the other side of the Loop Road, bearing in mind the major obstacle of the heavily-used traffic route west of Nottingham.
No one can dispute the jobs which will be created, but one can only imagine the chaos resulting from the major road works necessitated by this development.
I am sure this aspect of the proposals will have received due thought and consideration by the planning authorities!
