NOTTINGHAM South MP Lilian Greenwood has backed a push to find new blood donors in the city and county.

She donated blood at Nottingham Donor Centre, in Castle Boulevard, yesterday along with Nottingham City Council's Bridge ward Councillor Nicola Heaton.

Ms Greenwood said: "The NHS relies on donors and it was a deeply rewarding experience to give blood today. If anyone is considering giving blood I'd urge them to get in contact with the service today."

Holly Mason, lead donor relations manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "We'd like to thank Lilian Greenwood for supporting us in raising awareness of blood donation and the need to recruit new donors.

"We're very grateful to everyone in the area who has come forward in recent months but we still need more people to come forward.

"More than 1,000 new registrations are needed every day to replace those donors who can no longer donate. Each donation can potentially save up to three lives so you can really make a difference."

A total of 3,088 people in Nottingham, and Notts registered as new blood donors during a push which ended last month.

The campaign was launched after a dramatic decline in the number of younger donors signing up in 2012. They dropped by more than a third in two years in Notts.
