TO find out if an apprenticeship is really for you, the website www.apprenticeships.org.uk is a useful source of information with a detailed question-and-answer section and case studies.

The best way to search and apply for apprenticeship jobs is to register on www.apprenticeshipvacancy matchingservice.lsc.gov.uk, the official online recruitment system for England. There are around 10,000 vacancies being advertised at any one time.

The information you enter when you register on apprenticeship vacancies appears on each application form, so make sure you check what you have written. Don't use abbreviations, and check spelling and punctuation.

Check your contact details. Make sure you have an appropriate e-mail address and voicemail message on your phone – you don't want to give employers the wrong impression.

You can search for vacancies in various ways, including by key word, location, job role or occupation type. You can also set up text and e-mail alerts, to be notified when new vacancies that meet your preferences become available.

You can apply for 10 vacancies at any one time but remember to regularly log on to your "My Home Page" to keep track.

Sell yourself. Make yourself stand out from the competition on your application form. Don't just give two-word answers. Include paid and voluntary work and try to communicate your strengths and what your can contribute to the organisation.

Prepare for your interview by researching the organisation. Prepare a couple of questions to ask the employer at interview, think about the questions you might get asked and prepare draft answers.

Don't be put off by rejections. There can be a lot of competition for some vacancies. Ask for feedback and try again.
