NOTTINGHAM Forest manager Billy Davies will today make a final search for a loan signing that could bolster his side's play-off push.
But Reds legend Garry Birtles believes the club should not panic if they fail to make new additions.
Davies has repeatedly said he would sign a winger or a striker if the 'right player' became available.
But the Scotsman has also made it clear that he is wary of making additions for the sake of it – particularly at a time when Forest have been in unstoppable form.
And, ahead of the closure of the loan window today, Birtles is concerned that harmony may be threatened if Forest add another squad player for the sake of it.
"Credit to Billy for maintaining that harmony, because it is not easy," he said. "But where would a new player fit in?
"Unless it is a real star name, somebody who is going to raise eyebrows and make people think 'Forest really mean business', I would be wary.
"If they can find a player who fits into that mould, then great. But I imagine there are not too many of those kicking about on loan. If Forest cannot land what Billy might call a stellar signing, I am not sure I would want to make a new signing and risk upsetting the apple cart.
"With the squad Forest have got, unless it is somebody outstanding, any loan signing is just going to be another player fighting for a place on the bench.
"And Forest have enough of those already."
Forest already have five players on loan, in the form of Elliott Ward, Daniel Ayala, Gonzalo Jara, Sam Hutchinson and Billy Sharp – and only five loan players can be included in a match day squad of 18.
And when it comes to caution, Forest's double European Cup winner Birtles believes the Reds boss is right to take that approach, insisting: "I'm not sure where Forest need to make new signings.
"I don't see an area where they actively need to make additions. In every position in the squad they have quality strength in depth.
"Look at the players who are fighting to get into the team; look at the players on the bench or who cannot even get into the side.
"You are talking about people like Lewis McGugan, Guy Moussi, Daniel Ayala, Greg Halford, Billy Sharp and Dexter Blackstock.
"These are superb players at this level, who are not getting a regular game.
"But the manager has managed to find a balance; to create an atmosphere where everyone is still happy.
"There is a harmony and togetherness in the squad. They really are a team."
