A PAIR of 12ft-high inflatable lungs will be on display in Old Market Square on Saturday as part of an event to promote organ donation.
The event, run by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, is part of the Trust's 'be a hero' campaign encouraging more people to join the Organ Donor Register(ODR).
The event - on April 6 from 9am-5pm - aims to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation, particularly among the black and Asian communities. Less than 2 per cent of these communities are on the ODR, but are three times more likely to need an organ transplant.
Local radio station Kemet FM is partnering with the hopsital's trust to promote organ donation and will be broadcasting live from Market Square on Saturday.
Andrew Campbell, Director of Kemet FM, said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals to support their 'be a hero' campaign. It is vital that people from the BME community join the Organ Donor Register because they are three times more likely to need an organ transplant."
People who want to join the ODR will have the chance to sign-up on Saturday. Doctors and nurses from NUH will also be handing out promotional material and be available to answer any questions about organ donation along with transplant recipients and donor families who will be holding short talks to highlight their experiences of organ donation.
Roger Freeston, Chair of the hospitals' Donation Committee, said: "Since the launch of our 'be a hero' campaign in January over 5,000 people in Notts have joined the Organ Donor Register. We want this to continue and I hope our event on Saturday will prove an ideal opportunity for people to learn more about the importance of organ donation."
