BESTWOOD people have welcomed the area's falling crime figures – but some say they still feel unsafe.
It comes after Notts Police announced crime in the area has fallen for the sixth year in a row.
Compared with the previous 12 months, there were 242 fewer victims of crime across the Bestwood Estate, Bestwood Park and Top Valley beat areas.
The figures show there were 1,006 crimes reported there from April 2012 to the end of last month. This is compared with 2,544 crimes reported in the same period between 2007 and 2008.
Steven Taylor, 35, a scaffolder from Bestwood Park Drive, said: "I moved in three years ago and I'd heard rumours about Bestwood having a bad reputation – but I've never had any trouble.
"Everyone around here seems to talk to each other and get on. I feel safe and have never heard of anyone being burgled or anything."
Beryl Hill, 73, who lives in Pedmore Valley, agreed, saying: "It's not too bad around here now. Not much goes on. But going out for me after dark is a no-no, but that's just me. I think this area is safe – but not far away from here I wouldn't feel like that."
City councillor Brian Grocock, who lives in Beckhampton Road, Bestwood Park, said: "There are good relationships between people, police and community protection officers now. They will stop and talk to officers instead of ringing in.
"There's a lot of good organisations – Bestwood Park Forum, Top Valley Tenants' and Residents group.
"In 2003 or so, on Bestwood Estate in one way or another people were very cautious about talking to the police, but trust has built up over time."
Bestwood Estate was known for being ruled by crime boss Colin Gunn, who was jailed for 35 years in 2006 for conspiracy to murder Joan and John Stirland in their Lincolnshire home in August 2004 in a revenge killing.
Mr Grocock added: "There were some people who had respect for him – and some still do, but I think it is dwindling away."
He said: "A lot of money has been spent on facilities in the area. We need to pass on the positives that have happened over time.
"We've made great inroads and we're making this one of the safest areas to live in Nottingham."
One retired couple, who live in Pedmore Valley but asked not to be named, said they were burgled a few years ago.
The husband said: "I still say things are bad, I still see drug dealing happening in the area."
His wife added: "I know there used to be a lot of trouble but it does seem better. We probably don't see crime happen as much as hear about it.
"I'm a bit on the fence as to whether or not its got that much better."
