A NOTTINGHAM volunteer has been recognised for his work and commitment to children's health and fitness by winning the Energy Club's National Volunteer of the Week award.

Matthew Woolass, 26, was handed the honour as a result of his commitment to volunteering and contribution to getting local children more active and healthy.

Energy Club is the new extra-curricular, physical activity movement for children aged 4 to 11 and is available across the country to all schools, free.

Matthew became involved with the programme after Central College Nottingham, where he studies, became associated with Sports Leaders UK after initial links with the Community Sports Leadership and Higher Sports Leadership Programmes.

He said: "There are loads of things that are very good about the Energy Club programme. First of all, the sessions are inclusive. All pupils, no matter their ability, can get involved and enjoy themselves.

"Secondly, the way the activity cards are designed, using a minimal amount of equipment, is very useful and creative – therefore a student from the college can pick the cards, with them being very easy to understand and deliver, and also know all they need is the Energy Club blue drawstring bag and a few hoops and everything can be done."

Anyone interested in registering their school or becoming a volunteer should visit www.EnergyClubUK.org and leave their contact details. More information can on facebook/EnergyClubUK and on twitter @EnergyClubUK.
