NOTTS Fire and Rescue service will run a disaster exercise involving a mock three-aeroplane collision next week. The test, the biggest of its kind for the service in a decade, will be held at RAF Syerston, near Newark, on Friday, April 19. The air base is hosting it to test its crash and disaster plan. The exercise, called Double Impact, will involve over 100 firefighters and control room staff, and 20 fire appliances. The RAF, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Notts Police, the Environment Agency and Notts County Council will also take part. The test will deal with the three crashed aircraft, put out a major mock fire and rescue and treat dozens of trapped pretend casualties. Station Manager Andy Lindley, one of the organisers, said: "We run smaller exercises to test different teams and skills quite frequently, but this is the biggest one we have carried out in at least 10 years. "It will test firefighters on the ground, staff in the control room, equipment, procedures and the way we work with other organisations. "I hope we never have to attend a real incident like this but, because of such exercises, if we have to, we will be ready."
