AN engineering boss heads a list of the richest people in Notts and is now also one of the wealthiest in the country.

Tony Langley, owner of the Retford-based engineering business Langley Holdings, is now worth £1bn, according to the Sunday Times rich list.

The firm reported pre-tax profits of £102m for 2012.

This has helped to add £620m in a year to Mr Langley's personal fortune, which stands at £1bn – an increase of 163 per cent.

It makes him the richest person in Notts and also the second-wealthiest in the East Midlands.

Langley Holdings's 2012 annual report shows the firm remains a family business, with Mr Langley the chairman.

In the report, Mr Langley said: "2012 was a remarkably successful year for our group.

"Our businesses, with only minor exceptions, have performed ahead of expectation."

Mr Langley has risen the highest in this year's East Midlands list, and is also now the 84th richest person in the UK.

Top of the regional list is the Adderley family, owners of the Dunelm Mill chain of home furnishing stores. The business started out as a market stall in Leicester in 1979.

The annual rich list was released yesterday ahead of a full supplement published by the Sunday Times tomorrow.

Other Notts people on the list include Tony Wilkinson, of the Wilkinson chain of hardware stores. He came in at number 12 regionally – slipping down from sixth.

He was the richest person in Notts last year.

Mr Wilkinson's fortune is now £340m, having been £480m a year ago.

Fashion designer Sir Paul Smith, born in Beeston, is the 13th richest person in the region, down one place from 2012, but maintaining his fortune of £280m.
