BEING able make people smile is the reason Theresa Duffy volunteers.

The 35-year-old from Ollerton gives up a day and a half every week to spend time with elderly people who have mental health problems.

The mum-of-two also helps keep databases and spreadsheets up-to-date at Notts Healthcare's Duncan Macmillan House site.

Theresa, who has been volunteering for six months said: "I give what I can – normally a full day and a half day every week. It's something I should do. Without volunteers the NHS would be under a lot more strain; it's nice to give a bit back to the community.

"I don't have a life, but I love it. It's a sense of achievement; a recognition of helping people."

Most of Theresa's volunteering time is spent on the Orchard Ward at Billbrook, which looks after elderly people with mental health illnesses.

"We make them feel special and entertain them. You get a mixed reaction. But, for them to smile for a split second, is a nice feeling.

"We do loads of activities including indoor hockey, knitting, painting and makeovers."

Theresa also has personal reasons for being involved. Her grandmother has stage two Alzheimer's.

"I understand it," she said.

"It's knowing you're making someone's day.

"About a year ago I decided to get involved but I've always wanted to do it."

Theresa also studies at West Notts College and is heading to Sheffield University in September. Despite that though, she has no intention of giving up.

Theresa added: "I will always find time to volunteer – I wont give it up, it's always give something back."
