New concern over travellers on Clifton Village Green

TRAVELLERS have again moved on to Clifton Village Green. Two caravans and a mobile home were at the site yesterday, to the anger of neighbours.

The city council says it is looking to start legal proceedings.

Last summer travellers moved on to the site from Village Road three times in three months.

Another group moved there in August 2011.

The latest group are believed to have moved on to the site on Tuesday. They refused to speak to the Post.

Andrew Bull, 44, who lives near the site, is annoyed by the disturbances

He said: "It's becoming a regular thing over the past few years to see travellers turn up.

"It makes the place look untidy. It is time something is done to stop them from getting on to the site."

Another Clifton resident, 68, said: "It's a pain that they keep turning up there. We don't want travellers around here.

"I just wish that something could be done to stop it."

The city council pledged last year to look into ways of stopping the travellers setting up camp there.

But so far there has been little progress.

Clifton South councillor Jeannie Packer said: "This is a concern for the whole of Clifton, as there are a lot of open spaces.

"It means travellers come along and park themselves up wherever. It also means that people in the area don't feel safe and secure.

"It is difficult to see what can be done to resolve this issue. Obviously the travellers have to park somewhere. Perhaps we need to have more specialist sites set up."

Already in the city there are two recognised sites which are designated for and owned by the travelling community – at Moorbridge, near Bulwell, and on land off Cinderhill Road, in Cinderhill.

A spokesman for the city council said: "We were made aware of this on Tuesday and acted immediately.

"Our legal services department is dealing with this as quickly as we can using the proper legal processes."

Under UK law, a landowner can ask travellers to move on, and can use the legal system to do so if they don't.

The landowner can apply to a County Court to serve an order on the travellers to leave the site by a given date.
