CONCERNS have been raised about a Long Eaton bar after a man suffered serious head injuries in an assault.

Police were called to Buzz Bar, in High Street, Long Eaton at about 7.40pm on Thursday.

A 20-year-old man was found at the back of the pub, in Clifford Street, with a serious head injury.

It is at least the third time police have been called to the bar in relation to violent incidents in seven months.

Long Eaton councillor Donna Briggs said: "Information about this incident will be passed to the licensing authority and could result in a review of their license.

"It's something the authorities take very seriously because generally Long Eaton is safe and incidents like this do not happen very often."

The victim of the latest assault was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre, where he remains in a serious condition.

A police cordon was up in Clifford Street yesterday, while police carried out inquiries.

The road has now reopened.

Long Eaton resident Phil White, 62, who works at MSR News Group, in the High Street, said: "Unfortunately an incident like this is not out of the ordinary for this area.

"You have four pubs within 200 yards of each other so people go out on a Saturday night and fall out with each other. There's a lot of vandalism as well, we've had windows smashed and when we come in there's always rubbish strewn all over the place.

"It would certainly be an area that would benefit from extra police patrols and personally I'd like to see fewer pubs in such a concentrated area."

Police were also called to Buzz Bar at 2am on Friday, January 25, when a 36-year-old man suffered a broken nose and eye socket after been assaulted outside the bar.

Another incident occurred at about 10.20pm on Friday, September 28, when a 39-year-old man reported being struck in the face with glass in the bar's toilets.

Bar general manager Chas Rathaur took over the premises about three months ago, and said he was doing all he could to keep the venue safe.

He has made a number of changes, including increasing door security, changing the dress code and the types of drink they serve.

"Before the incident on Thursday we have not had any trouble since the Christmas period," he said.

"With the incident on Thursday the gentlemen involved were only in for ten minutes before we asked them to leave because they were getting rowdy. We did everything we could and always try to do everything we can do to prevent disturbances."
