A WOMAN who sold fake jewellery online has been told to pay back more than £10,000 or face a 12-month jail term.

Lorraine Thornley, 51, of Rossendale, Ilkeston, was brought before Nottingham Crown Court under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

She was given six months to pay back the money she owed and was warned that, if she was jailed for failing to pay, she would still be liable for the amount on her release.

Thornley last appeared before the court on Wednesday, March 13, when she was sentenced to 180 hours of unpaid community work for two offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994.

She had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

Back in March the court heard that county council trading standards officers had bought items from Thornley's online shop, called Charms UK.

Examinations found that the jewellery was fake while a search of her home uncovered more than 100 counterfeit bracelets and charms. Invoices from Chinese Wholesalers were discovered showing Thornley had bought the items for as little as £2.30, but sold them as Pandora jewellery for prices of up to £23.

Inquiries revealed that her jewellery sales during the eight months that she traded, from May 2011 to January 2012, amounted to over £16,000.

After fees were paid £10,771 was shown to have been deposited into her accounts.

Derbyshire county councillor Dave Allen said: "We are determined to ensure that unscrupulous traders don't benefit from their activities."
