Broxtowe council votes down plans for late night booze levy

BROXTOWE Borough Council has given a "resounding no" to plans for a late night booze levy in the area. The proposals would have seen licensed premises in Broxtowe charged between £299 and £4,440 as part of a late night levy. The money would be split between Notts Police, who would get 70 per cent, and Broxtowe Borough Council to pay for street wardens, taxi marshalls and CCTV. Pub-goer Matthew Watts, 28, from Stapleford, said he was worried the levy would get passed on to drinkers. He said: "Pubs are finding it hard anyway and if they have to pay out extra for more policing, then they will either lose profits or pass the cost on and it's already expensive for a beer. "It's also not really that bad around here. You get a bit of trouble every now and then, but they should be looking at the city centre where I imagine there's more trouble, rather than small local pubs." The Alcohol and Entertainments Licensing Committee met yesterday to discuss the plans and a spokeswoman for the council said they were given a "resounding no" by members.
