THEFTS of stethoscopes and prescription pads were among crimes recorded at Notts GP surgeries over the last three years.

Figures also showed one doctor was attacked as a patient was about to undergo a mental health assessment.

While crimes at surgeries fell slightly in the year to April, a medical group said some offences against medical staff were "abhorrent".

The crimes were listed in a response to a Freedom of Information Act request published by Notts Police.

They show there were ten crimes at Notts surgeries in the year to April 2012, compared with 13 in the year before.

Three years ago there were again 10 crimes. Among the offences were the theft of three stethoscopes from an office in a surgery over three months.

Another thief took 50 prescription pads after sneaking in through a staff door.

The document does not reveal the exact locations or dates of the crimes.

Dr Gregory Place, chairman of Notts Local Medical Committee, which represents GPs, said violence was rare in his experience but attacks on ambulance and emergency staff were more common

Dr Place, a GP at Ashfield House, Forest Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, said: "We do not have many problems in general practice, and to some extent the public are our eyes and ears and do report things they see.

"It is a problem that ticks over and grumbles and I don't think there's been an escalation of it."

He said among a handful of incidents in a 24-year career he had one patient attempt to attack him with a crutch about ten years ago because he denied him a sick note.

He added: "As a doctor you accept that some patients are angry and have an agenda, but also you have some that may behave a certain way because they are mentally ill."

A number of schemes for violent patients run in Nottingham, including a mobile surgery for patients taken off the list of their GP because of safety concerns.

Dr Laurence Buckman, chairman of the British Medical Association's GP committee, said: "Any form of violence or crime is deplorable, but it is especially abhorrent when directed against healthcare professionals whose main focus is to help people.

"GP surgeries are an integral part of the local community and in inner-city areas, such as those in Nottingham, GPs and their staff are on a daily basis treating some of the most vulnerable people in our society."

He said there was some evidence that there has been a national increase in attacks on NHS staff across the country in the past year.

According to the NHS Business Services Authority, attacks were at 51 for every 1,000 workers in the year up to April 2012. The rate was 40.5 per 1,000 workers for the year before this period.
