IT is set to be a historical summer for Nottingham, with the arrival of the Ashes at Trent Bridge. It should not be overlooked how many opportunities these sporting events present for local business.
To make the most of the influx of tourists to Nottingham, licensees and businesses need to be prepared. Businesses should consider the following:
Temporary event notices: Proposed activities may not be covered by an existing licence. For extended opening hours, use of outside areas or other licensed activities, it will be necessary to issue a Temporary Event Notice. These usually require at least 10 working days' notice, so it will be necessary to plan ahead in order to provide additional activities.
Noise levels: Potential noise nuisance from musical entertainment needs to be considered.
Anyone smoking outside the premises or leaving late at night should be encouraged to keep noise levels down. It is advisable to display notices asking customers to respect neighbours and residents.
Staff training: If extra bar staff are to be employed during the busy period, it is essential to ensure that they are given authorisation to sell alcohol by a personal licence holder. All temporary and permanent staff should be adequately trained in dealing with underage sales and intoxicated customers.
Partnership working: It is advisable to liaise with the council and other authorities such as the police regarding any proposed events. It will also be beneficial to work with Nottingham BID and other organisations such as Experience Nottinghamshire to take full advantage of the opportunities available.
