Part of Mansfield Road in Sherwood closed this morning after a rubbish fire broke out in a used appliances shop.
Pictures taken by one commuter during rush hour show the extent of the smoke, from the building on the corner with Haydn Road.
The fire, at Sherwood Appliances, was reported at 8.20am by a resident of a flat above a neighbouring shop.
Police and four fire engines attended the scene.
Mike Douglas, who owns the nearby Sherwood Business Centre, said: "The police and fire service did everything they could to work on the fire without disrupting the traffic too much, this was much appreciated.
"Sherwood has changed a lot in the last two years and has a thriving business community including new cosmopolitan coffee shops.
"Litter continues to be a problem and perhaps this fire will make people that have no regard for discarding litter think."
