TWO people have been killed after a van crashed into a lorry on the A1 this morning, resulting in a blaze and huge plumes of smoke. Both passengers of the van were pronounced dead at the scene, near Newark, while the 60-year-old driver of a white Volvo lorry was left shaken. The lorry is believed to have been carrying gas canisters, and the collision resulted in a fire. The road between the A52 junction at Grantham and the A46 junction at Newark was closed following the crash at 5.30 this morning, but has since reopened heading south. Diversions are in place between the A52 and A46 on the northbound carriageway - which is expected to be closed for most of the day. Six fire engines attended the scene this morning. Police are urging motorists to avoid the area. If you saw the crash contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident 115 of 19 June 2013, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
