NEIGHBOURS have spoken of their shock after a woman was attacked in a Lady Bay street in the early hours of Sunday.
The 31-year-old was found in Rutland Road with injuries to her face at about 3am yesterday. 0411
People living nearby said they had been frightened by the attack, which happened between the two junctions with Ropsley Crescent, close to a disused air-raid shelter.
One person described hearing someone crying at about 3am and seeing a group of people in the street.
Chris Hodgkinson, 66, who lives a few doors from the scene of the attack, said: "We've lived here for 35 years and couldn't believe it when we got up this morning and saw all the police vehicles across the road. We've not known anything like this here before."
Police said the victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre for treatment and was discharged yesterday.
No arrests have been made.
The road was closed and cordoned off for most of the day.
Officers were seen carrying out a fingertip search of the road and searching undergrowth around the shelter.
A woman living nearby, who did not want to give her name, said: "My husband heard something going off and looked out the window. Then he heard someone crying and then someone talking.
"Apparently, there were quite a few people over there.
"I don't think it was anything to do with the shelter – it was just someone coming along."
Melodie Halling, 57, who lives in Rutland Road, said: "I couldn't believe it when I woke up and saw all the police.
"Nothing like this usually happens around here.
"It's a bit frightening to think about what might have happened."
A Notts Police spokesman said: "Police are currently working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"Officers will also be carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area and reviewing CCTV footage."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
