NOTTS County Council is looking to take over the running of a struggling primary school. Burton Joyce Primary has been placed in special measures by Ofsted. The watchdog's visit came after concerns were raised about failings in the school's safeguarding procedures. Among the issues were allegations that Year 4 girls watched adult TV during a school trip to Skegness. The council's service director for education standards and inclusion, John Slater, said the Ofsted report "expresses significant concern about aspects of the school, including the strength of the governing body which is why we are minded to use our statutory powers to ask the Secretary of State for Education to dissolve the governing body and allow the local authority to form an Interim Executive Board". Head teacher Margaret Gretton is currently suspended. The council said acting head teacher Phil Palmer had overseen an improvement in standards.
