LILI Eastell-Adams and Amelia Hayman were shocked to learn that this summer's must-have fashion accessory is a plastic bag seemingly made out of pieces of Lego.

The two 14-year-old schoolgirls had been hard at work producing their own range of jewellery made out of Lego.

And among the items they had on sale at Saturday's YouNG Market, in West Bridgford, were Lego ear-rings.

"We were shocked to see in a national paper on the same day that Chanel had such a similar idea," said Lili.

The East Leake Academy students were among dozens of stallholders at the event, in Central Avenue.

It was arranged by Rushcliffe Borough Council to give people aged between 13 and 21 the chance to make and sell their own products.

"It's really exciting being able to sell our own things," said Amelia.

"You get to learn a lot. We've also got scarves and other things which are all hand-made.

"We spend lots of time together creating all of this stuff – every week night and at weekends as well."

There was a huge variety of products on offer at the market, ranging from jewellery to food and drink.

While stallholders were able to keep profits for themselves, two students from South Nottinghamshire Academy in Radcliffe-on-Trent were raising money for their school.

Jemmima Guy-Clark and Charlotte Smith, both 13, were selling a variety of different prints and T-shirts which had been made by academy students.

"We want to be able to raise money for the academy rather than ourselves," said Jemmima. "That's why we are here. It's a really good experience."

From the start of the event at noon, crowds flocked to see what the youngsters were selling.

Pat Rowe, 60, of West Bridgford, said: "It's wonderful that they are getting the chance to make and sell items. It is an experience which will really help them."

Rushcliffe Borough Council chief executive Allen Graham said the council hoped to set up similar events at least once or twice a year.

He said: "This is the first one and we hope the first of many. It gives young people a chance to show off their talent."
