RESIDENTS have said that plans for 4,000 homes between Tollerton and Gamston would lead to a "Great Bridgford".
They fear the new homes would mean there is no buffer between West Bridgford and Tollerton and that the road system would not cope.
The plans are part of Rushcliffe Borough Council's housing strategy and went on display at Tollerton's Methodist Church in Stanstead Avenue yesterday.
Hazel Salisbury, of the Tollerton Against Backdoor Urbanisation (TABU) group, said: "People are being asked where they would like to see the 4,000 homes developed around Tollerton and Gamston, and not encouraged to look at the borough as a whole.
"There are only 850 homes in our village and introducing another 4,000 will change the face of it completely.
"Traffic will be a problem as well, in addition to other amenities such as schools, libraries.
"Rushcliffe Borough Council is also looking at other areas, such as Clifton and Ruddington to build houses and I think there's a case that it's appropriate there – they are already sizeable towns with good connections.
"Clifton will soon have the tram and an extended A453.
"As it stands, we don't have anything in place to deal with more housing.
"Although, we understand development must take place and we're not against the principle at all, the council just needs to be aware we think the numbers are too high."
Other sites suggested for development include 500 more homes south of Clifton and 550 more homes at Sharphill Woods, in Edwalton.
Speaking to the Post when the plans were announced, council leader Neil Clarke said he knew there would be opposition but that local government had to take responsibility: "We've got to plan for the next generations and there are tough challenges that we've got to face.
"This is where we're left at the moment, trying to decide where is the least undesirable place to build.
"We hope we can have a sensible discussion with residents given the fact that we have to allocate this level of land for housing."
A further two consultation events will take place on the plans. One at Gamston Community Hall in Ambleside on Wednesday, July 10 between 3pm and 8pm and another next Monday at Clifton Cornerstone Church in Southchurch Drive between 3pm and 8pm.
