NEIGHBOURS got together for a street party at the weekend, celebrating how much they enjoy living in their road.

Residents of Mona Road in Lady Bay applied to have their street officially closed and organised a party with food, live music and games.

Teacher Gillian Leigh-Browne, 47, was one of four neighbours organising the event after a similar party last year celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

"It rained then, but we had such a great time we decided to do it again," said Gillian, who has sons Oliver, 7, and Matthew, 6. "We're very lucky to live on Mona Road. Everyone here looks out for everybody else – it's a really friendly place.

"We felt it was important to bring people together and make sure everyone was involved.

"I hope it's an inspiration to others."

Brenda Stevenson, 68, has lived there nearly 40 years and was invited to a street party celebrating the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

"We used to have bonfire parties as well," said Brenda, a data manager for Notts County Council, who has grown-up children. "My children loved growing up here. It's brilliant for getting people together."
