Train firm takes union to court over action

BOSSES at East Midlands Trains are looking to take legal action against a rail workers' union.

Members of the RMT union in Notts are conducting a work to rule against the company.

The action means members, including platform staff and conductors, aren't working overtime.

But East Midlands Trains claims the action is illegal and is worried the union may look to talk members into taking strike action. It is seeking a High Court injunction to stop it.

The train firm claims the reasons behind the dispute given by the union, including failing to consult over the closure of Nottingham Railway Station and trying to impose new terms and conditions on the back of the work, are made up.

A spokesman said: "We have been forced to start legal proceedings to prevent the RMT from trying to cause disruption to our passengers.

"This is an invented dispute and there is no substance to the allegations made by the union. The shifts our people are working are all within the parameters of the respective terms and conditions which have been agreed by the RMT."

In response, the RMT has said it is "determined" to carry on with the action.

A spokesman said: "We firmly believe that management should sit down and enter into meaningful negotiation with RMT, instead of hiding behind the anti-trade union laws in an attempt to prevent the union from taking industrial action."
