POLICE trying to trace train passenger who racially abused two Chinese women have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to.
British Transport Police (BTP) said a man, travelling on the Saturday, October 12 19:52 East Midlands Trains service from Liverpool Lime Street to Nottingham, verbally abused and directed racist remarks towards the women.
Officers said when another passenger attempted to intervene he was subjected to a "tirade of abuse" as well.
The man responsible was travelling as part of a large group and it happened as the train passed between Manchester and Sheffield some time between 8.40pm and 9.50pm.
Officers have now released a CCTV image of a man they would like to identify who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries into the crime, and are appealing for help from members of the public to name him.
PC Ewan Brechin said: "It is completely unacceptable to use racist and abusive behaviour towards passengers on trains or at stations.
"We will always seek to trace and convict anyone who engages in this type of unacceptable behaviour and are actively seeking to identify the person responsible, including viewing the CCTV and appealing for further witnesses to come forward.
"We are especially keen to speak to the man pictured, who we understand may be a Chesterfield Town football supporter returning from a match in Fleetwood."
