FAIRGROUND rides, festive music, reindeer and a visit from Santa Claus were all part of the Long Eaton Christmas light switch-on.
The annual event saw hundreds of families gather around the Market Place area of the town centre for an evening of traditional festive fun tonight.
June Cuttriss, 69, of Dockholm Road, Long Eaton said: "I have been to the event before. It is always brilliant. The atmosphere is good and it is really good for the kids. It was good seeing the light switch-on and it's nice to get involved. It helps you get into the mood for Christmas."
The evening also included street entertainers, fun 'walkabout' characters, a Christmas market and an illuminated Christmas Light Procession from pupils of Dovedale Primary School.
Rachel Corssley, 42, of Breedon Street, Long Eaton said: "I normally come every year, it is always enjoyable. It is good for the kids because there are quite a lot of rides. My son was really excited to come. it is nice seeing the lights switched on and it makes you feel part of the community. It is good some of the shops have stayed open too."
St Laurence Church, in the Market Place, joined in with the festive fun by opening its doors for visitors to marvel at an array of decorated Christmas trees.
On stage, festive songs were provided by local band Wildest Dream along with performances by the Long Eaton Silver Prize band accompanied by the U3A choir.
Cameron Heathcote, 26, of Neale Street, Long Eaton, said: "My son has been on a few rides. He is the only reason I really come for. It makes me feel a little Christmassy though and it's good to see everyone out."
At 7pm, the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Val Clare, took the stage to switch-on the Christmas tree lights.
Jackie Hopkinson, 36, of Briar Gate Long Eaton, said: "My daughter really liked the reindeer and she sat on Santa's knee. She even got a present. It is a good atmosphere. I am surprised by how busy it has got, it is really popular."
Alyssa Meadows, eight, of Long Eaton, said: "I am having fun. I have been to see Santa and I asked him for some Barbie books for Christmas."
