Council tax: Bills have increased £1,000 in 20 years

Households in Notts will pay around £1,000 more next year in council tax than they did 20 years ago, figures have revealed. The average bill in Notts was £600 in 1993/94. In 2014/15, the average will be £1,652. Over the same period, inflation only accounts for £411 of this rise. Government figures show people in Newark and Sherwood will pay the most council tax next year - with a Band D property paying £1688.05. Nottingham City Council is next with their residents in Band D properties being charged £1675.83. The area with the lowest council tax bills next year is Erewash with £1,511. It is all a long way from when council tax was first introduced 20 years ago, with Nottingham City Council charging £630 and Newark and Sherwood charging just £1 more. However, you have to bear in mind that inflation since 1993 has meant that £630 is worth about £1,061 in today's money. The figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government also show that in recent years the increase in council tax has been a lot less severe - most probably due to the fact authorities have to hold votes if they want to increase bills by more than 2 per cent. Before 2010/11, every area in Notts saw bills rise by more than three per cent every year - with double digit increases taking place in 2003/04 everywhere except Nottingham City Council which increased bills by 8.3 per cent. For the last four years, Notts County Council has freezed its share of the council tax bill which has meant some areas have seen no increase in their bills - and a reduction in real terms owing to inflation. But the authority has decided to increase its bills by 1.99 per cent for next year. And with Nottingham City Council voting through a 1.95 per cent increase, it means every household in the county will be paying more for council services from April.
