The Green Party candidate for the Newark by-election says a win for Ukip in the seat would be a disaster. David Kirwan was the first candidate from any of the main five parties to arrive at Kelham Hall for the count, at around 10.30pm on June 5. The result is expected between 2am and 3am on June 6. Mr Kirwan said: "For Newark to be the first Ukip seat in Parliament would be a complete disaster. "I would rather see the Tories win," said the former Labour man, who lives in Newark. Mr Kirwan said his campaign had gone well, and hopes to come out ahead of the Liberal Democrats in the seat that the Greens haven't stood for since 1992. "We would like to beat the Lib Dems," he said. "But we don't really know how it will go because we haven't stood here for so long. We'd like to make an indent. "We've had a positive response from door-to-door. I've come across old friends and teachers who've wished me well." One teller showed The Post his count, which showed no votes for the Greens, yet one for Nick the Flying Brick, of the Monster Raving Loony Party. "I'm sure that won't be the case at the end of the night," said Mr Kirwan. "A couple of the other candidates are a bit of fun but I'm sure the people will vote for the main parties in the end."Stay up to date with all the happenings at the count on our live blog here
