Turning 60 has inspired a retired nursery teacher to spend a year raising £60 for 60 different charities.

Pamela Morton, of Calverton, has already raised around a third of her £3,600 target which will be divided between 35 Notts charities, 15 UK charities and 10 international ones.

The mum-of-two decided to set herself the challenge after reaching her milestone birthday on January 22.

She said: "I had been mulling over what to do to celebrate my birthday and had considered maybe walking 60 miles for charity and then almost out of nowhere I thought of this.

"To be honest I am a bit out of my comfort zone and I don't really like asking people for money so I have been organising events instead that people can attend and buy tickets for - it has been quite a lot of hard work but I have had some lovely responses."

The project was launched on February 1 with a 60's themed disco and movie night.

Mrs Morton said: "We watched a 60's film, The Italian Job, and had a 60's raffle with prizes like a blow football game and baby sham bottles.

"There was a 60's quiz and we finished with a 60's disco - it was a fantastic evening and we raised over £500 so it was a great start."

Local charities which will benefit from Mrs Morton's challenge will include RSPCA Radcliffe-on-Trent Animal Shelter, children's charity When You Wish Upon a Star and Stonebridge City Farm, in St Ann's.

She said: "Originally I was going to split the charities evenly between local, national and international.

"But then I asked my friends and family what charities they thought I should nominate, as they would be the ones paying as it were, and there were just too many to chose from.

"Besides that is what this is all about, community."

Marketing co-ordinator of Stonebridge City Farm, Azzieria Tooby, said: "A specific donation doesn't go towards anything in particular but a donation of £60 will feed a rabbit on the farm, for 60 days.

"For somebody to go out of their way to raise that much money for any charity is incredibly touching."

A spokesman for When You Wish Upon a Star said: "A donation no matter what the size is always very welcome and will go towards granting the wishes of our children, it is a wonderful thing to do."

Mrs Morton will end her challenge on February 1 next year, with a "Not 60 Anymore" charity barn dance.
