A CARE centre in Stapleford has collected more than 900 tins of food for the Post's Five Tons of Tins campaign in just a month.
Stapleford Care Centre started collecting at the end of October and staff and visitors have given overwhelming support to the campaign.
They have now contributed more than a third of a ton towards our target.
The Post, with the help of schools, churches, businesses and community groups, is trying to collect five tons of tins – the equivalent of more than 11,000 tins – for Nottingham's food banks by Christmas, to ensure cash-strapped families don't have to go hungry in the festivities.
Locality centre manager for the care centre Cheryl Deller said she was extremely pleased with the progress.
She said: "We have collected at least 900 tins so far, which is amazing. I read about the campaign when the Post launched it on October 21 and I thought it was such a good idea.
"We thought it was great that the campaign is supporting local people in need, especially at this time of year, and we knew it was something our visitors would want to get behind."
She added that she was touched by the generosity of the people of Stapleford and district.
"People have just been so kind and have been bringing tins every day, so much so that we had to create a bigger collection box. We're hoping to keep our collection going strong until Christmas."
Wilkinson Plus, in South Church Drive, Clifton, is also collecting.
Store manager Lisa Richardson-Bell said she was pleased with how its tin collection was going.
She said: "We have filled our box once so far, which is about 30 tins, and I went and delivered it to the Clifton food bank myself.
"I was touched by how much food had been already donated to the food bank. This is something which, as a company and a Clifton store, we are very much behind, as it supports and helps local people in need."
Staff at the Bakersfield and Neighbourhood Community Association in Sneinton Dale have also backed the campaign.
They will place a collection box in their foyer from today and are encouraging visitors to help where they can.
Caretaker Gillian Sanderson, 36, said she thought the campaign was very important during the festive season.
Miss Sanderson, of Sneinton, said: "Everyone can safely say that giving to this campaign is the right thing to do.
"Even if it is a tin of beans or soup, it is something that could make a difference to a family in need.
"We just want to collect as many tins for the Post's campaign as we can by Christmas."
If your collection box is full, please drop it off as soon as possible at your nearest food bank and mention that it is part of the Five Tons of Tins campaign by the Post.
