Filming of a new TV adaptation of DH Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover will begin this autumn – in Wales.

The 90-minute drama will be based on the famous novel, which was inspired by the people and places of Nottinghamshire.

But bosses have announced it will be filmed well away from DH Lawrence's home town of Eastwood.

It will be screened on BBC One next year, with the exact date yet to be announced.

Malcolm Gray, chairman of the DH Lawrence Society, based in Eastwood, believes the best location for filming would be in Nottinghamshire.

And he hopes the adaptation will differ from some previous attempts.

He said: "As a society we are delighted that this will put the spotlight on the work of DH Lawrence.

"Often some TV adaptations do not give an accurate reflection of what Lawrence wrote. There are important things to consider like getting the emphasis right.

"Many areas and landmarks that DH Lawrence used are still there today."

Mr Gray said he hopes the drama will focus more on the story of class boundaries than the racy relationships.

He has invited the team behind it to contact the society for directions on how the novel should be interpreted.

He added: "It is obviously a sensitive story and is famous for all the wrong reasons."

The TV adaptation is not likely to be the only version of Lady Chatterley's Lover being filmed.

Earlier this year the Post revealed that film-maker Sony Columbia Pictures has struck a deal for the rights to the novel.

The story was first published in 1928 but was initially banned in both the UK and US for being too racy.

It tells the tale of a wealthy married woman who starts a love affair with the gamekeeper on her husband's estate.

The TV version will feature Holliday Grainger, who has appeared in Tulip Fever and The Riot Club, as Lady Chatterley.

Richard Madden, of Game of Thrones fame, will play the gamekeeper. James Norton, whose CV includes Happy Valley, will play the role of Sir Clifford Chatterley. The drama is being written and directed by Jed Mercurio. It will be produced by Hartswood Films in association with Serena Cullen Productions.

Mr Mercurio said: "I'm hugely flattered that such a fabulously talented young cast will bring these iconic roles to life."

The drama will be one of many adaptations of classic literature being screened on TV next year.

Serena Cullen, producer at Serena Cullen Productions, said: "It's an exciting challenge to be producing Lady Chatterley."

Beryl Vertue, executive producer for Hartswood Films, said: "I am delighted to be working with Serena Cullen who developed this exciting project, and Jed's great screenplay has enabled us to attract these fine actors."
