ANOTHER Notts MP has joined calls for more safety checks at a pedestrian crossing where a teenage girl was fatally injured by a tram.

Chris Leslie, MP for Nottingham East, said he was "saddened" by the death of Lindsey Inger, 13, of Bulwell, after last Wednesday's accident near Bestwood Village.

He said: "It is vital that we ensure the tram network is as safe as possible and I hope any safety improvements necessary can be made urgently."

Sherwood MP Mark Spencer has already called for improvements at the double crossing, which has already undergone an overhaul after the deaths of a woman and her grandson on the railway line in 2008.

Mr Leslie added: "While this incident was not in the Nottingham East constituency, local people will want the integrity of the tram network safety arrangements checked and double-checked."

Lindsey's family, including her foster mum Marlene Starling, yesterday called for the crossing to be closed until any review is complete.

Tram operator NET, Notts Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch are all investigating the tragedy and Network Rail is also cooperating with the enquiries.

The family are still seeking a venue on the weekend of December 15 and 16 for a fun day to raise money to pay for Lindsey's funeral. Anyone who can help with a location, or who would like to donate, is asked to contact donna.elliott2@sky.com.
