A 12-year-old girl was left shaken after a man approached her in a Gedling street and tried to carry her off.
Police are trying to trace the man, who targeted the girl on Perlethorpe Avenue on Monday December 3 at around 7.40pm.
He approached her from behind and tried to lift her off the ground, but she escaped from his grasp and he ran off.
The man is described as white and in his 20s or 30s. He had a bald head and was wearing dark clothes.
Detective Sergeant Paul Lefford said: "There is a lot of communication about this incident on social media, much of which is speculation. I would urge people to avoid fuelling the situation with rumours as it is not helpful to the investigation or to your community.
"This appears to have been an isolated incident and we are investigating the circumstances in a bid to identify the man.
"We have increased patrols in the area and are working closely with the schools in the area to ensure children are familiar with the stranger danger principle.
"Anyone who has experienced a similar approach by a man fitting the above description should call police."
If you saw the incident or have any information about the man's identity please contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 725 on 3 December 2012, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
