A DEVOTED mum has told how her six-year-old daughter saved her life in a devastating house fire.
Little Abbie Baker was sleeping on the top bunk of her bed when she was woken up by the smell of thick, acrid smoke.
She screamed out and woke her mum up as the fire ripped though the family's home in Roker Close, Aspley.
Mother Teri Baker, 27, was asleep in another room and close to falling unconscious when she heard Abbie's screams.
She said: "I could just about hear Abbie shout out, and then the adrenaline kicked in.
"Had it not been for her I would have been dead. I was totally asleep.
"She saved my life, there is no doubt about it. She's a little heroine. The fire service said another five minutes and that could have been it."
The fire happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning and has left the house uninhabitable. The Baker family say all their clothes and belongings have been destroyed.
Abbie, who goes to St Teresa's Catholic Primary School in Aspley, said: "I was asleep but then woke up because I could feel smoke in my mouth. I shouted for mummy to wake up.
"When she came into my room I jumped on her and she carried me down the stairs and out the back door."
Notts Fire and Rescue Service say that the fire was caused by a candle which had been left burning. However, the family say house insurers are investigating.
Dad Steve Baker, 39, who has been married to Teri for three years, was working for delivery company UPS at East Midlands Airport at the time of the blaze, but rushed home when a neighbour told him what had happened.
He said: "I am incredibly proud of Abbie.
"Even though we're now homeless in the run-up to Christmas I'm so thankful we're all together. Things could have been so much worse."
