Second driest September on record for Nottinghamshire

After experiencing the county's second driest September on record, farmers are desperate for rain - but not too much.

In Notts, just 6.6mm of rain fell between September 1 and 28 - 12 per cent of the expected average for the month.

That was 16.7mm less than in 2013 - and way below the average expected rainfall of 54.7mm for September.

Peter Gadd, of Hollygate Farm, in Stragglethorpe, said farmers are now waiting for some rain in October so that they can sow their wheat and barley.

Mr Gadd, who is a member of the East Midlands branch of the National Farmers' Union (NFU), said: "Because it has been so dry we haven't been able to create stale seed beds, for weed seeds to germinate, particularly black-grass.

"We haven't planted our wheat and barley seed yet. If they sit in dry soil without germinating they are more prone to slug attacks, and if it stays dry for too long they lose vigour and go mouldy.

"We are now approaching the end of the optimum sowing window, and after the first couple of weeks in October, we go into a yield decline scenario, potentially. Farmers are trying to hold off as much as they can for the rain without running the risk of too much moisture that they can't sow their crops."

September also fared much better than August - which experienced 85mm of rain. This was 27.5mm more than the expected average for the month.

Erin Huckle, PR manager manager at Experience Nottinghamshire, said: "Nottinghamshire enjoyed some great weather last month, and we saw this translate into an increase in visitors to popular attractions and events around the county."

In the UK, there was just 19.4mm of rain between September 1 and 28 - 20 per cent of the average rainfall expected for the month.

It was also the equal ninth warmest September for Nottinghamshire since records began in 1910.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said Nottinghamshire could be in for a spell of rain towards the end of the week.

They said: "The rain will travel down the UK on Friday and Saturday, and there will be more rain coming through on Sunday."
