The Ministry of Defence has said it is not prepared to comment about a military fighter jet that flew across Nottinghamshire. Sightings of the plane, believed to be an RAF Tornado, sparked huge interest across the county on Tuesday evening, sparking speculation that it was training in readiness for service in Iraq. But the Government department told the Post it would not be saying anything about the jet until it could prove it was definitely a Royal Air Force plane. Matt Goold, publisher of The Beestonian magazine, said the plane had got people talking. Mr Goold, who saw it fly over his house in Attenborough, said: "We often have planes going fairly low but this seemed very loud and kept getting louder. "It drowned out everything. I looked outside but I couldn't see anything. My neighbours were all looking out their windows too. "I put a message on The Beestonian Facebook Page. Normally, we get around 1,000 views but this got four to five thousand views in a couple of hours. It was very well-received and a lot of people said they had heard the plane, too. The suggestion was that it was doing a training manoeuvre over Chetwynd Barracks, but I can't verify that." Mr Goold added that he had heard from several people that the aircraft was a Eurofighter Typhoon jet. Mr Goold said it would be worrying if it wasn't. "I hope it is one of our own. "If it is another air force it is massively out of its airspace, which would be worrying. "It is interesting. I know the MoD isn't going to give away too much but it is not the most confident answer from them I suppose." Andy Hallam, of Toton, said he was in his garden at around 7.30pm on Tuesday when he heard a "deafening" noise. The 35-year-old greengrocer, who lives in Hamilton Close, said: "I was with my two little boys and my wife at the time; the kids both covered their ears. "As I looked up, it came over my house. I am 99 per cent sure it was a Eurofighter Typhoon plane. "It was a lot lower than I have ever seen a plane flying over here. It was on its own and seemed a bit out of place. It looked like it has gone straight over Chetwynd Barracks but I have no idea why. It would be nice to know." A spokesman for East Midlands Airport confirmed there was a military aircraft in the area at that time but could not say for definite if it was an RAF plane.
