THE funeral of Mansfield music star Alvin Stardust, who died last week, will take place next week in Swansea. The service will be held at St Thomas Church, chosen as it was the same church where he married his third wife Julie Paton more than 15 years ago. The funeral will take place at 1pm on Wednesday November 5, followed by cremation. A book of condolence has been set up at Mansfield Museum for people to pay tribute to Alvin, who was raised in the town. Born Bernard William Jewry, the former Southwell Minster Grammar School pupil first appeared as Shane Fenton at Mansfield's Palais de Danse, which was located just opposite the museum in Leeming Street. More recently, Alvin had contributed some of his famous glam-rock costumes for an exhibition at the museum. The book of condolence at the museum's reception desk will be available for the next three weeks. It will then be handed to his widow as a lasting tribute from the people of Mansfield. The 72-year-old, who had been battling prostate cancer for the past 18 months, had been working on his first studio album in 30 years. Called Alvin, it is released this week. Lifelong friend and fellow performer Vince Eager, from Radcliffe-on-Trent, said: "I had worked with him only a few weeks ago. I know he will be remembered for songs like Coo-Ca-Choo, but at heart he was always a rock and roller. That was his real passion." The singer started out in the music business in the 1960s but became a huge star on the back of the 1970s glam rock craze scoring hits with tracks including My Coo Ca Choo and Jealous Mind. Born in Muswell Hill in London in 1942, he moved to Mansfield as a young boy and attended what is now the Southwell Minster School. The book of condolence can be signed at the museum from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
