THE city's Old Market Square will be lit by 4,000 lights when Nottingham's Christmas tree is unveiled. The tree - a spruce bought from a farm in Solihull - is 60 feet tall and work to install it in front of the council house began on Tuesday. A giant crane was brought into the city centre to help position the tree, which is expected to be fully up and ready for when the Winter Wonderland Christmas market opens on November 20. The tree will be positioned just in front of the ice rink which will also open in Old Market Square. Council bosses said this year's tree would stand in the square until January 6 and it will take a whole week to dismantle it. The Winter Wonderland continues until January 4 and includes snow-topped cabins, bandstand, licensed bar, food and drink, local traders and crafts people selling Christmas gifts. The official lights switch on in the city will take place on November 21.
