Movember: Nottingham ready for mustachioed month

CHARLIE Chaplin, Hulk Hogan and Forest legend Kenny Burns all have one thing in common. You guessed it, moustaches. Movember is back, and facial fuzz is springing up across Nottingham as the charity looks to continue its work in "changing the face of men's health" every November. Among this year's fundaisers is Barry Holliday, of Bilborough – who has already begun to resemble wrestling superstar Hogan just days into the month. The teacher at Djanogly City Academy said: "I've always fancied going for the Hulk Hogan handlebar. Half the point is about making a big deal out of it and looking a bit silly." Mr Holliday, 36, has been getting some stick from his maths students already, but says it's all in good jest. Which is lucky because, as Hogan once said, "Negativity and Hulkamania are two things that don't go together." "The kids go mad for it," he said. "When I came in clean shaven on the last day of October I looked like an egg because I've not got any hair on my head. I just tease the ones who can't grow any facial hair." This is Barry's third forray into Movember with fellow Djanogly teachers who call themselves The Djanogly Mo Bros. "We all go for different styled tashes," said Barry. "We make them as wacky and wild as possible." Donations are welcome but Mr Holliday says spreading the message of the month is more important. "Personally I've only raised something like £50 each year but it's more about raising the awareness of men's health," he said. Movember works to improve the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems. And barbers are getting in on the act, including Deckchair Barbering and Hairdressing, in Derby Road, Nottingham. Owners David Grant and Dan Grice, who opened two weeks ago, have had a series of close shaves this week, as people prepare by taking down their stubble. "We get guys with full beards who need it taking off and throughout the month we're doing moustache styling and giving out the wax so people can twist the ends," said David, who shaves twice a day himself. "Tashes have been shaped into all sorts of shapes and sizes. We had someone come in with what looked like Jafar out of Aladdin and I've seen some people who have carved theirs into the Batman logo." The barbers are both taking part in this year's Movember efforts, but disagree over the exact rules. "I went completely shaven so Dan's ahead of me so far," said David. "I think you should start from scratch on the first of the month."
