Ambition on water and ice

Runners-up: Jamie Tsang, Nottingham Academy, and Faizan Shah, Farnborough Academy

TORVILL and Dean had better watch out as 12-year-old Jamie Tsang is already competing at international level.

The Nottingham Academy student has already met his idols. He had the chance to skate alongside Torvill and Dean in the training stages of a new ITV programme which will see the Olympians open up the world of skating to children from the city's council estates.

Mum Din Lai, of Carlton said: "My son is a very shy boy normally, off the ice.

"But when he is performing, he is a totally different person. He's confident and he expresses himself though skating."

For the past three years, Jamie has been training with the Nottingham Ice Centre academy.

He has represented Great Britain at international competitions. PE teacher David Balfe nominated Jamie for the award.

He said: "Jamie is a credit to himself and our school and we can't wait to see him take gold at the Olympics."

Fellow nominee Faizan Shah was put forward because of his dedication to rowing.

The 17-year-old student at Farnborough Academy has already enjoyed international success.

The school's sports captain said: "What I'm looking towards now is university, then the Olympics and World Championships."

PE teacher Edi Johnston said: "I remember Faizan's first PE lesson. He was this big lad doing gymnastics, and I instantly knew he was talented, flexible, strong and co-ordinated.

"He said he wanted to be a rower, and to break Steve Redgrave's world record."

Faizan, of West Bridgford, said: "Mr Johnston is the reason I came back to rowing. I injured a forearm last season and stopped for about six months. I was about to quit, but he talked me out of it."
