NOTTINGHAMSHIRE'S Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping has been interviewed as a witness by officers investigating allegations of abuse at care homes.
A BBC reporter revealed Mr Tipping had been interviewed through a tweet on Wednesday afternoon.
But Nottinghamshire Police refused to confirm whether he had been interviewed, either voluntarily or under caution.
However, the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner has confirmed Mr Tipping has given a witness statement in relation to the investigation.
Nottinghamshire Police are carrying out the investigation – Operation Daybreak – to look into historic claims of sexual and physical abuse at five former children's homes from the late 1960s until 2000.
It was originally set up to investigate allegations concerning the former Beechwood Children's Home, in Mapperley.
However, where people have reported abuse at Beechwood and at other locations, including other children's homes, the inquiry team has retained the investigation.
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said:
"We have interviewed a number of witnesses in our investigations under Operation Daybreak, but it would be inappropriate for us to identify those people."
