Dog rescued after fire breaks out at Newark Conservative Club

A dog was rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in a snooker room at Newark Conservative Club.

Crews from Newark and Collingham were called to the social club on London Road at about 12.15pm on Sunday, following reports that the building had become smoke-logged.

They discovered a fire in the ground floor snooker room.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call from an occupant of the building to say it was on fire.

"We advised her to get out, and based on what she said we mobilised an ambulance because she was coughing.

"When firefighters arrived all people were accounted for and one female was treated for smoke inhalation.

"We requested police to attend for control of traffic because it was a busy road

"One dog was rescued by the fire service and the fire was put out."

Firefighters were on scene for several hours, leaving at about 2.45pm. They spent an hour damping down once the flames had been put out.

It is believed the fire was started accidentally.

Newark's Tory MP Robert Jenrick said: "Fortunately everyone is safe and well. I'm grateful for the response of fire crews and paramedics who were exemplary and incredibly kind to those evacuated."
