Karate lady, 69, gets black belt on first go

A 69-YEAR-OLD woman has punched and kicked her way to a black belt in karate.

Karin Williams took up self-defence in February 2009 and since then has competed in Las Vegas twice and even won a bronze medal in the Ozawa Cup – an international competition with over 900 competitors.

Her latest achievement was completing her first-dan black-belt exam at The Dojo, Humber Road, Beeston.

The retired legal executive of Louis Avenue, Beeston, said: "I have always been fit and active and I was getting a bit bored, so I thought I would try karate because it sounded better than line dancing.

"I got quickly hooked and I now love it.

"After winning my bronze medal in 2011, I was determined to come back and get my black belt.

"Completing it after my first attempt has been great and I am over the moon."

Mrs Williams believes she is a lot safer with her self-defence skills despite her age being the cause of some jokes.

She added: "I do get people asking if I will hit them with my Zimmer frame but I just joke back.

"I am the oldest person I know to have got a black belt and I am usually the oldest at competitions but I don't let it bother me.

"Karate is good for people of any age because it keeps you fit and teaches you skills to defend yourself.

"I will continue training and I want to now help with some instructing. I want to thank all instructors for taking me on."

To obtain the black belt Mrs Williams had to complete a series of complicated moves and fight with a partner.

Chief instructor Aidan Trimble believes that she is one of the oldest black belts in the area.

The former karate world champion said: "She has done extremely well and we are all proud of her. I do get people that are older coming for lessons because karate is great for balance, fitness, memory and being sociable.

"Karin is the oldest person I have trained up to black-belt level. She is extremely dedicated and I think that if she could, she would sleep at The Dojo."

NURSES have recalled the moment they tried to hold on to the legs of a 55-year-old hospital patient as he hurled himself through a window.

A team of nurses and doctors on the fourth-floor neurological ward at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre held on to Joseph Tauya's legs for about seven minutes before they lost grip and he dropped to the ground and died on March 1 last year, an inquest heard.

Giving evidence, staff nurse Annamma Paul said it was "horrific and heartbreaking" to watch. "I was holding on to his legs," she said. "My arms were started to get tired. It was horrific."

The court heard that Ms Paul had since suffered from post-traumatic stress as a result of the graphic nature of Mr Tauya's death.

The day before he died, the father-of-three had undergone an operation to remove a malignant tumour on his brain.

The operation had gone well, but the inquest heard that after surgery, Mr Tauya's sporadically suffered from euphoric and paranoid episodes.

One reason cited for this was the strong steroid medication he was prescribed to reduce brain swelling.

One of the side effects of this drug, dexamethasone, the inquest was told, was that it could lead patients to have disturbing thoughts.

Another nurse, Rowena Pulk, who gave evidence yesterday – the first day of the four-day hearing – said that in the build-up to his death, Mr Tauya, originally from Zimbabwe, had been pacing up and down the ward and had tried to leave.

She said: "He was banging on the door and shouting 'Jesus is in me, I am the saviour'."

It was after this that he leapt on to the window ledge in the ward and smashed a window at around 1.30pm on March 1 last year. A doctor and around 20 people on the ward came to try to pull Mr Tauya away from danger.

"I remember my arms starting to hurt and losing grip," said Ms Pulk

"I could see his hands trying to take my hands away. He was trying to get away from us."

The court heard that in trying to save Mr Tauya, many of the nurses and doctors injured themselves on jagged glass, and that Ms Pulk had also suffered psychologically from what had happened.

Coroner Miss Mairin Casey said: "I am already of the opinion from the independent police investigation that there was nothing more they could have done to prevent what happened."

A pathologist recorded the cause of death as multiple injuries.

Mr Tauya of Braunstone, Leicester, had been married to his wife Moira for more than 18 years and also left three children, aged 3, 12 and 17.

The inquest continues.

Part of Mansfield Road in Sherwood closed this morning after a rubbish fire broke out in a used appliances shop. Pictures taken by one commuter during rush hour show the extent of the smoke, from the building on the corner with Haydn Road. The fire, at Sherwood Appliances, was reported at 8.20am by a resident of a flat above a neighbouring shop. Police and four fire engines attended the scene. Mike Douglas, who owns the nearby Sherwood Business Centre, said: "The police and fire service did everything they could to work on the fire without disrupting the traffic too much, this was much appreciated. "Sherwood has changed a lot in the last two years and has a thriving business community including new cosmopolitan coffee shops. "Litter continues to be a problem and perhaps this fire will make people that have no regard for discarding litter think."

A MAN has been banned from contacting his ex-partner for two years after he attacked her in front of her son, a court heard. Lee Collier turned up at her house in Forest Fields and pushed her over on May 28. He lashed out because he thought she was seeing someone else. Their one-year relationship had ended that day but Collier was still texting her. He pushed her to her front, causing her to lose her balance and fall, and called her a rude name, Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard. Collier was arrested and charged with assaulting her. He was further charged with witness intimidation, after her sent her a text message asking her to drop the charges if he deleted her phone number. At court, he pleaded guilty to both charges. District Judge Leo Pyle banned the 29-year-old, of Denman Street, Radford, from contacting his former partner for two years and imposed a community order for 12 months. He said Collier should pay his ex-partner £100 compensation, a victim surcharge of £60 and prosecution costs of £85. "You leave her well alone and comply with the terms of the order," he said.

Proposal for new housing development worth £96m

PLANS have been submitted for a £96 million 830-house development in Netherfield, which could create 700 jobs.

The plans, for land off Teal Close, include a large employment area, community hub, primary school, hotel, care home, playing fields, a public open space, a 10-hectare ecology park and allotments.

The homes would be designed to match the Victorian style of surrounding buildings.

After two public consultations and a lot of local public interest, formal plans have been handed to Gedling Borough Council by developer Northern Trust.

Tina Simpson, trustee and treasurer of the Netherfield Forum, said: "There are certainly positives and negatives with the development, but overall I am in favour. The regeneration will bring opportunities for jobs and homes, which are needed, but we want to make sure that the site does not isolate itself from the rest of Netherfield, which is a fantastic community."

Mrs Simpson said that congestion could become an issue, with the likelihood of two cars for each of the 830 households.

"We want to ensure the surrounding environment is not damaged, yet the potential for increased footfall would be great," she said.

John Clarke, leader of Gedling Borough Council, said: "I personally welcome any development to the site off Teal Close."

He said he was excited about a number of proposals in the pipeline at the moment, including a recent application for a supermarket off Colwick Loop Road and new businesses set to open at Victoria Retail Park.

"All these things are going to make it so different down there.

"People will spend money locally and they will also have easy access to the city centre."

A Northern Trust spokesman said: "We are grateful to everyone who has provided their feedback as part of our consultation process, both at the exhibitions and via our website and e-mail address. The proposals will bring major benefits to the local community."

Following comments from the public, new elements have been added to the scheme, such as a footway along Stoke Lane and a commitment to fund public transport improvements.

The spokesman added: "We have taken into account people's views when preparing our proposals.

"We look forward to working with the community as the plans progress. Please keep checking the website for updates."

POLICE are hunting a taxi driver who sexually assaulted a teenaged passenger in his cab.

The 19-year-old woman got into the five-seater dark green London-style Hackney cab just before midnight on Monday, February 11, of this year and was driven to the junction of Trinity Avenue and Albert Road, just off Lenton Boulevard, Nottingham.

The taxi driver got out of the car and went to the back of the taxi, where he forced the woman to carry out a sex act.

DC Jon Kerry, investigating the attack, said: "Taxi drivers are in a position of trust to get their passengers home without incident.

"We would ask anyone who knows who this man is to contact us."

The attacker is described as Asian, around 40, 5ft 6in tall and with a big stomach.

He was balding with closely shaved or cropped hair.

Nassear Ahmed, chairman of Nottingham's Hackney Association, said: "This is a despicable crime and one that the Hackney carriage community is sickened by.

"We would urge anyone with information to come forward and help the police in their investigations.

"We would like to reassure the public of Nottingham that travelling by Hackney cab is safe and I speak for all our drivers in our disgust and dismay at this incident."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Radford Road CID on 101, extension 802 4684, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

THE speed limit on a major Notts road is set to be reduced from this evening. The limit on the A453 will be cut from 60mph to 40mph and average speed cameras will be switched on from 8pm tonight. The new limit will apply on the five-and-a-half mile rural section between the M1 junction 24 and Clifton. A reduced speed limit in the urban area will be put in place at a later date. Meanwhile from next Tuesday, Barton Lane will be permanently closed to traffic between its junction with the A453 and Nottingham Road. This will allow it to be converted into a public footpath, bridleway and private means of access. Highways Agency project manager Jonathan Pizzey said: "The A453 improvement got off to a strong start in January and we continue to make good progress. "We have started the main earthworks and over the coming months people will see an increase in activity along the route. "As part of this work it is also necessary to reduce the speed limit for the safety of road users and the protection of road workers. We ask road users to drive carefully through the works and observe all signs."

Man stabbed boy after thinking he was a 'demon'

An alcoholic has been jailed for 16 years after stabbing a boy in the head because he thought he looked like a demon. Steven Frogg, 51, of Frederick Street, Mansfield, attacked the four-year-old with a carving knife, slashing him five times on his head and twice on his back. The boy suffered three fractures to his head. Frogg took a sharp breath on hearing his sentence at Nottingham Crown Court today. The court heard that Frogg had become paranoid and thought people wanted to kill him. He also believed his flat was haunted and that there were demons in his home, defence barrister Nicholas Dean QC said. On the day of the attack in April last year, Frogg became convinced the boy looked like a demon. The court heard there was no evidence Frogg suffered from a mental illness, but that he was an alcoholic. On the day of the attack, he was five times over the legal driving limit. Judge Michael Stokes, sentencing, said that the amount of alcohol Frogg drunk on the day of the attack may have proved fatal to someone who was not used to drinking. He described the child as being a "lovely little boy" and that the attack was "ferocious and frenzied". He added that although the boy had made a remarkable recovery, he still suffered psychologically and had nightmares.

Forest's Simon Cox involved in late drama as Ireland almost shock Spain

NOTTINGHAM Forest's Simon Cox was involved in late drama as Ireland almost shocked Spain in America last night. Sean St Ledger thought he had equalised for the Irish after a Stephen Kelly header had been pushed onto the bar. But striker Cox had touched the ball into St Ledger's path, when he had been in an offside position and the goal was ruled out. Had it been allowed to stand, it would have made the score 1-1. The underdogs had succeeded in keeping the Spanish at bay until the final quarter, and might have nicked a draw from a late rally before Juan Mata added to Roberto Soldado's opener late on. Iker Casillas had also been forced into producing two quality saves as the Irish pushed for a battling draw. But coach Giovanni Trapattoni, while pleased with his side's display, admitted that the better team had won. "The better team won," said the Italian. "They are the champions of the world. We know the Spanish players and they are superior technically and usually have more possession. "But football is particularly strange because we had chances, Conor Sammon had one, and then there was the goal. But that said, we have to recognise that Spain deserved to win. "They controlled the game for 45 minutes but we had a good balance and good personality." It took until the 69th minute for Spain to break the Irish resolve, with Arbeloa cutting inside and feeding Soldado who unleashed a first time effort into the bottom corner. Despite a brave effort from Ireland – and that disallowed goal – Spain bagged a second three minutes from time, after Santi Cazorla fed Mata. Ireland: Forde (Randolph 74), Coleman, St Ledger, O'Dea, Kelly (Delaney 90), Coleman, McCarthy (Meyler 85), Hendrick (Quinn 46), Keogh (McClean 74), Keane (Cox 57), Sammon. Spain: Valdes (Casillas 59), Arbeloa, Pique, Ramos, Alba, Busquets; Silva (Navas 46), Xavi (Mata 69), Iniesta (Fabregas 59), Pedro (Cazorla 80), Villa (Soldado 59).
