Notts County hold their own against silky Spanish opposition

A DRAMATIC fight back saw Notts County draw 2-2 with Rayo Vallecano at Meadow Lane.

Having already toured Finland and also faced top sides from Romania and Turkey, the Magpies encountered another stiff European test from Madrid-based Vallecano, who finished eighth in La Liga last season and showed the sort of skill on the ball rarely seen in League One.

Notts had gone into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead, but a dominant second half performance full of pace, guile and an impressive range of passing saw Vallecano level the scores and then take the lead themselves.

Despite the visitors dominance, though, with just ten minutes to go Notts dramatically levelled the score to the appreciative cheers of the home crowd.

And the Notts fans who braved the conditions to watch the game were given a glimpse of new signings Mark Fotheringham, Danny Haynes and David Bell – with the pacey Haynes particularly impressing.

Regardless of the visitors' pedigree, it was the Magpies who started the game as the more dangerous side, with Jamal Campbell-Ryce winning the ball on the half-way line – embarking on an exhilarating run down the right-hand flank and putting the ball round Nacho Martinez, who eventually got back to block the cross.

Despite promising early signs from the Magpies, Vallecano were largely dominating proceedings, operating a fluid 4-5-1 system and showing the sort of poise in possession often associated with Spanish sides.

With five minutes on the clock, Alberto Perea had a golden chance to open the scoring for the away side, a whipped corner eluded everyone in the box only to fall to the midfielder's feet. But Perea miskicked and the danger was averted for Notts.

The Magpies responded with another chance to score on the break after eight minutes when strong work from Francois Zoko saw him win the ball from a Vallecano defender, only to shoot from a tight angle when through on goal rather than squaring to strike-partner Haynes.

For all of Vallecano's comfortable possession, Notts were the team carrying the most obvious threat and had a guilt-edged change with ten minutes gone. More strong work from Zoko carried him away from two defenders and his deep, whipped cross was met by Haynes, whose header was well saved by Ismael.

After nearly five minutes of almost completely dominant play from Vallecano, the away side produced another chance. Roberto Trashorras found space on the edge of the box, but his rasping drive was straight at Bartosz Bialkowski and the keeper saved it easily.

And the visitors went close again in the 25th minute – centre back Mario Gomez curling a delightful 20-yard free-kick just wide of Bialkowski's right-hand post.

After 35 minutes, Notts' ability to cause problems on the break shone through again – Campbell-Ryce dancing forward with the ball and whipping a 20-yard strike just wide of Ismael's goal.

And it was the Magpies who broke the deadlock just before half time. With 45 minutes on the clock, a free-kick whipped in by Alan Sheehan was flicked lightly home by Haynes – who beat his marker to the ball and found the left-hand corner of the net to score his debut goal for the Magpies.

And as the sides made their way back to the dressing room, the Magpies players could be forgiven for having a skip in their step. A hard-working performance punctuated with genuinely dangerous counter attacks had earned them a 1-0 lead.

Notts started where they had left off in the second half – substitute Yoann Arquin skillfully crossing from the left wing only for Zoko to fire high and wide.

But unfortunately for the home supporters, Vallecano's half-time team talk had galvanised the away side and 15 minutes into the second half a goal-mouth scramble saw Adrian Gonzalez touch the ball over the line to level the scores.

And the away side ruthlessly took the lead just two minutes later when Gonzalez scored his second – deliciously curling the ball home from 20-yards.

As the half progressed, Vallecano started to show the sort of play that justified their impressive league placing in Spain's premier division last year – Gonzalez, Trashorras and Saul Niguez passing and moving with consummate ease and leaving the Notts players chasing shadows.

Notts had barely touched the ball the next time Vallecano threatened – attacker Jose Carlos' long range strike was well saved by Bialkowski in the Notts goal and with 12 minutes remaining, the away side went close again when Johan Mojica powerfully fired just over from 25 yards out.

But against all the odds, the Magpies couldn't be kept out of the game and levelled the scores with just ten minutes left to play.

Substitute Arquin seemed desperate to grasp his opportunity from the bench and will have sent his manager a message as he powerfully rolled his man on the edge of the box, striding toward goal and smashing a half volley past the helpless Ismael.

And the Notts striker had another chance just seconds later as Notts won the ball from the kick off, but he snatched at his shot and it trickled harmlessly wide.

Arquin's finish proved to be the last meaningful action of the game and the home fans left Meadow Lane impressed with what their side had offered. In a stern test against high quality opposition, the Magpies showed many qualities that will serve them well in the coming season.

CLEAN-UP work has begun in Notts after heavy rain brought flash flooding across the county. Notts Police issued a warning this morning, saying pockets of standing water are still causing a danger on numerous roads. Drivers are being urged to take care and be aware that in some areas damage has been caused to drain covers, leaving debris in the road. Southwell was particularly badly hit yesterday, with over 50 houses affected by the rising water. An advice centre will be opened at Southwell Town Hall, The Burgage, Southwell, later today for those who need flood related advice or assistance. People who have been working in flood water are also being reminded that hand washing is essential afterwards. The A612 remains closed this morning between Southwell and Thurgaton to enable urgent clean-up operations to take place. Council staff have been working through the night to clear the road, and drivers are asked to take an alternative route. A tree has also fallen in Cundy Hill at Southwell and diversions are in place. For further information go to the Environment Agency web site www.environment-agency.gov.uk or ring the flood line service on 0845 9881188.

Troubled hospital trust believes it can train managers better

BETTER training is being offered to hospital managers after Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust was placed in special measures by the Government. Health secretary Jeremy Hunt announced last week that the trust which runs King's Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield and Newark Hospital had been placed in special measures in the wake of the Sir Bruce Keogh report which criticised the running of both hospitals. The trust will now be closely monitored by inspectors working on behalf of NHS boss Sir Bruce Keogh, and one aspect of criticism levelled against health organisation was that its management structure needed to be more effective, and in some cases more "visible". On Tuesday 24/7 the trust announced that it had developed "a new way" of training managers designed to equip them with "skills" and "leadership". In the same breath the trust said these managers would be taking part in a package called the 'Leadership Programme', which it developed back in 2012 - the same year Sir Bruce's report found death rates were higher than expected, analysis suggested that for every 100 people who may have been expected to die, 113 had died during 2012. The trust said that the programme would enable middle mangers to "manage themselves" and "create a well organised department". So far 60 managers have completed the training, with a further 24 booked in. Lee Radford, head of training, education and development said: "It's even more important in today's NHS that we support managers and to provide them with the training, knowledge and tools to be effective, innovative and efficient leaders. "Strong leadership is synonymous with high performing and successful organisations. "We are passionate at the Trust about developing and growing our staff and to provide talent management opportunities to support succession planning accordingly. "One of the strongest measures of success of the programme is that managers who have completed the programme have nominated their own staff to attend future programmes and recommended the programme to others."

Nottingham Forest are just hours away from completing a deal with Algerian winger Djamel Abdoun. The 27-year-old, who plays for Olympiakos, is set to sign a three-year contract with the club. The Reds must agree personal terms with the Algerian international, after agreeing a fee believed to be in excess of 2m euros. Born in Montreuil, France, Abdoun began his career at Paris St Germain in 2002. He was released at the end of the season without making a first team appearance. In 2003, aged 17, he penned a deal with Ajaccio. He would remain at the club until 2008, making only 10 appearances and scoring two goals along the way. He headed to Manchester City on loan in 2007, "with a view to the future rather than an immediate first-team breakthrough", said the Manchester Evening News. Abdoun joined the club for the rest of the season, with the option of a permanent move in the summer. But he returned to Ajaccio at the season end, after playing just once for City. His next loan move was to French club Sedan, where he remained for one season. In 2008 Abdoun signed a four-year contract with FC Nantes, stating his goal was "to flourish and grow." But two years later, in August 2010, he joined Greek side Kavala. Abdoun penned a three-year contract with the club, and went on to impress during his first season in Greek football. By November 2010 he was reportedly being tracked by Olympiacos coach Ernesto Valverde, and in May 2011 was named the second-best player of the season in the league. Later that month Abdoun's agent said the player was on the verge of signing with Panathinaikos, but in August he penned a deal with Olympiacos. The winger joined the Greek side on a free transfer, after they were relegated to the fourth division. The player told DZ Foot: "I am very proud to have signed with a big European club, I will work hard to justify the confidence they have placed in me." He added: "I play right or left, I do not have a preference and I will do everything to force me into the first team." Abdoun has won back-to-back league titles with Olympiakos, making 50 appearances for the Greek side and scoring nine goals. Earlier this month he spoke of his desire to play in England again. "I'm a big fan of English football, my first experience was not fantastic at City but I have more experience now," he told Sky Sports. "I have been the best passer in the Greek league for the past three years, I want a new challenge. "To play in England again would be fantastic." Abdoun has played 11 times for Algeria, including helping them to fourth place in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE have given batsman James Taylor the all-clear to play for Sussex in the three day game against Australia starting this Friday, with a view to him playing in the next Ashes Test against the Aussies, starting next week. Following discussions between Notts and the England management, Andy Flower, England team director, said: "We would like to thank Nottinghamshire CCC and Sussex CCC for their support and understanding in allowing Nottinghamshire batsman James Taylor to play for Sussex against Australia in the three-day tour match beginning on Friday. "This will provide James with a valuable opportunity to play in a longer format of the game while we consider our options ahead of the third Investec Ashes Test next week. "Kevin Pietersen is continuing his recovery from a calf strain and a decision about his availability for the Test will made nearer the time." Notts director of cricket Mick Newell added: "We want to provide James the best possible opportunity to be prepared to play in the third Test should he be required. "While clearly he is an important player for us and will be missed in our Friends Life t20 matches on Friday and Sunday we have a proud record of producing players for England. "We remain in close contact with James and the ECB regarding the situation and hope that he can make a contribution and be selected." Notts already have bowlers Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad in the England Ashes squad.

THE Court of Appeal has rejected a challenge to Government plans to go ahead with the HS2 high-speed rail project. If built, HS2 would see trains travelling from Toton to London in under an hour. Fifteen councils and other objectors had asked the appeal judges to order further assessment of the scheme as a whole. All grounds of challenge were dismissed at the court yesterday.24 High Speed Rail Minister Simon Burns said: "By dismissing all seven grounds of appeal and declining to refer the case to Europe, this is the second time in four months a court has rejected attempts to derail HS2. "Parliament is the right place to debate the merits of HS2, not the law courts, and we will introduce the hybrid Bill for Phase One before the year is out. "I urge opponents not to waste any more taxpayers' money on expensive litigation and instead work with us on making HS2 the very best it can be."

REPORTS in Greece suggest Nottingham Forest will discuss personal terms with Olympiakos winger Algerian winger Djamel Abdoun over the next 24 hours. While the club have also stepped up their interest in Burnley striker Charlie Austin. And reports in London suggest that QPR are close to accepting a bid for winger or forward Jamie Mackie. Discussions are understood to be taking place in Greece with 27-year-old Algerian international Abdoun, after the Reds agreed a fee in excess of 2m euros with Olympiakos. While Forest have cranked up their efforts to bolster their goal scoring power, by launching bids to sign Austin and Mackie. The Post reported earlier this week that Forest had registered a £1.5m bid for Mackie, the former Plymouth player, who Davies hoped to sign during his first spell in charge at the City Ground. And sources in London suggest the Reds could be close to agreeing a deal for the Scotland international, who is surplus to requirements at Loftus Road as Harry Redknapp looks to restructure his Rangers squad. Forest are also poised to pounce for Burnley striker Austin, following the recent collapse of is move to Hull City. The Tigers pulled out of a £4.5m deal for the Burnley's 28-goal top scorer of last season, after a medical highlighted issues with his knee. But Austin has played for 18 months without any significant injury problems and Forest are ready to test Burnley's resolve. Austin started his third consecutive friendly game for Burnley last night, as they won 2-1 at Tranmere. And Burnley boss Sean Dyche was relaxed about the player's position, saying: "From my point of view, I'm delighted (he's still at Burnley). He's a solid boy and it (missing out on his move to Hull) is not the biggest hardship, if you've come from playing for Poole Town, working on a building site. "There's plenty of good things going on for him, and the fact he's fit and well is one of them. "We're still letting the dust settle, we want to get him doing what he does best, enjoy his football and score some goals." Other transfer gossip: Wayne Rooney hopes to join Chelsea but will accept a switch to Arsenal if a chance to work with Jose Mourinho does not materialise. (Daily Mail) Alan Pardew says Manchester United have not bid for Yohan Cabaye. Although the Newcastle boss admits that every player has a price. (The Sun) Manchester United manager David Moyes has until July 31 to bid for Marouane Fellaini. The Everton midfielder has a buyout clause of £22m — but it expires at the end of the month. (The Sun) Real Madrid have issued yet another hands-off warning, over Cristiano Ronaldo, to Manchester United. (The Sun) West Brom want £2m-rated Sunderland midfield Craig Gardner. (Daily Mirror) West Ham are on the trail of QPR front man Loic Remy. (Daily Star)

BARBARA Clough, the wife of legendary Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough, has died. The family have confirmed that she passed away at the weekend. The news comes just two months after Lilian Taylor, the wife of Cloughie's right hand man, Peter Taylor, died at the age of 84. It is almost nine years since Clough, who also managed Derby County, Leeds, Brighton and Hartlepool, died, aged 69. Former Forest striker Garry Birtles says the role Barbara played behind the scenes, in supporting her husband, cannot be under estimated. "They say behind every great man is a great woman and that was truly the case with Barbara," he said. "She was always a source of stability; a rock for Brian. "The role she played in supporting him cannot be underestimated."

Meadows residents gearing up for Britain in Bloom

RESIDENTS in The Meadows are stepping up their efforts in preparation for a national competition. Organisers of The Meadows in bloom are ready to convince the RHS national judges on August 1 that their community gardens and green streets are deserving of the highest awards. The judges will base their decisions on community participation, environmental responsibility and horticultural achievement. Enthusiastic residents and over 20 organisations, including three schools, residents' associations, sheltered housing and Nottingham City Council, have devised imaginative gardening and horticultural projects to merit Silver and Silver Gilt awards in previous regional rounds of Britain in Bloom. Now one of 80 finalists in the national competition, the Meadows are hoping to go one better. Meadows in Bloom co-ordinator Guy Jones of The Meadows Partnership Trust said: "This part of Nottingham has an undeserved reputation but things are starting to change. "Gardening in all its forms has brought people together; they sit and chat, share horticultural tips and even water each other's displays. As a community development exercise it has been a great success giving various groups the opportunity to focus on real improvements to their area and forging stronger links within the community in the process."
